I love homemade Halloween costumes! My older two are almost too old to want dear old mom, ha, to make their costume. They've been caught up in schoolyard play and would rather be Batman, Mario or Princess Peach. However, this year, my four year old really wants to be a bird. I was elated, a bird I can do, and what fun I can have doing it! This is a bit of my process on the making of the wings. You can find the tutorial I used for inspiration here. I'll post a finished photo soon.
I've always tried to encourage homemade costumes on my kids, I want to try and foster their own imaginations, "What do you want to be???? You can be anything!" I remember the days of dressing up like Charlie Chaplin, a hippie, a snow queen, raggedy anne, seeing trees, a stop sign once, a lamp, or something your Grandma made. So much is store bought now, go to the store and let it decide for you. I really hope one day my kids will grow up and appreciate the value in using what you have, especially your imagination! Either that, or they'll grow up feeling like they'd been totally deprived by a mom who forced them to wear homemade!
Here's a couple of costumes from past Halloween's...homemade of course.
The snow white costume is homemade, but I can't take credit, it was a good ol' thrift shop find.
Happy Halloween prep to you all!
I have been wanting to make those wings for a while - they look awesome! Making costumes is one of my favourite things too. Rowan is going to be Winston Churchill, and Lucy can't decide between Robin Hood and a princess. We'll see how it turns out. :)
